Lucas Vázquez is Real Madrid’s main concern ahead of the match against Inter Milan. The winger, a full-back in recent matches, was not in this Sunday’s training session.

Real Madrid began to prepare for the decisive Champions League match against Inter Milan, pending the status of Lucas Vazquez, who suffered a muscular injury against SD Huesca and has Zinedine Zidane on the edge of his seat.

Real Madrid put their minds to an important Champions League game on their third matchday. A single point from a possible six leaves Zidane’s team bottom of the group and with the need to beat Inter Milan on Tuesday if they are to keep their chances of finishing first in the group phase or advancing from second to the round of 16.

Zidane pampered his starters, with a recovery session and a gentle run on the pitch. They worked more intensely on Sunday morning with the substitutes.

The attention of the coach is focused on Lucas Vázquez, who was substituted against Huesca due to muscular discomfort and who is waiting for medical tests to find out if he is injured. Sources at the club informed ‘EFE’ that the player is still suffering from discomfort and will undergo an MRI on Monday. He is a serious doubt to play against Inter Milan.

Zidane will not recover any of his injured players for the Champions League. Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernandez are already working on the pitch together with Norwegian Martin Odegaard and Alvaro Odriozola, but outside of a group that completed a training session that consisted of exercises with the ball and shots on goal.

The Norwegian, in fact, could be called up for the next league match of Real Madrid, which will be next Sunday against Valencia, informed ‘Marca’.

On Monday, Real Madrid will hold their last training session in their sports city before receiving Inter Milan on Tuesday at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium, in a session in which Zidane will bring together all their available players. While waiting for Lucas Vazquez to confirm his condition, he must decide whether to bet on Ferland Mendy or the Brazilian Militao at right-back. Toni Kroos is also expected to return to the starting line-up.

Wolves boss, Bruno Lage, thanked the club for bringing him to the Premier League after victory at Aston Villa.

Wolves looked destined for defeat when they fell 2-0 down at Villa Park, but three goals in the last 15 minutes of the game handed them an unlikely victory.

It was finished off by a 95th minute deflected free-kick from Ruben Neves and speaking after the game, Lage was grateful for the chance to be boss.

Boxing: Eubank Jr breaks down Awdijan; forces him to withdraw after five rounds

Chris Eubank Jr beat up Wanik Awdijan, forcing him to pull out after five rounds on Saturday night in Newcastle and say that his ribs were broken by body punches.

Eubank Jr had been punishing his rival with thudding punches when Awdijan failed to emerge for the sixth round.

Victory tees Eubank Jr up for the major fight he has been targeting in December en route to a world championship opportunity.

His shorts and ring-walk robe were adorned by the name of Sebastian, his brother who died in July.

Eubank Jr had been made to wait an agonising fortnight for this return fight, after two opponents withdrew from fighting him in a matter of days, and Awdijan asked him a few early questions with his tricky southpaw stance.

Eubank Jr was forced to nod in admission that Awdijan had caught him in the fourth round with a solid left hand.

But he turned up the heat and responded with body shots then a left hook.

The fifth round was Eubank Jr’s best so far – he thumped home a succession of shots to the ribs, and Awdijan was visibly breathing hard and backing off.

Awdijan, sat on his stool after the fifth, shook his head and called the referee over to signify his withdrawal.

Carl Froch questions whether Billy Joe Saunders has priced himself out of a rematch with Chris Eubank Jr.

“The guy came over and said that I broke his rib with a body shot so he couldn’t continue,” Eubank Jr told Sky Sports afterwards.

Guardiola hails England duo after procession victory over Burnley

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola 1 1024x538 1

Pep Guardiola took time to praise Raheem Sterling and John Stones after Manchester City beat Burnley 2-0 at the Etihad on Saturday.

Ahead of this game, Sterling suggested that he would be “open” to leaving City to get more game time.

The forward and Stones started against Sean Dyche’s Burnley on Saturday.

Man City were not at their best but they still managed to pick up all three points. They triumphed thanks to goals in either half from Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

Ahead of the rest of this weekend’s fixtures, Man City sit second in the Premier League. They are a point behind Liverpool, who are still unbeaten.

As reported by BBC Sport, Guardiola said that both Sterling and Stones “played really well”:

“After the international break it’s always a little bit difficult to come to a rhythm and I know how good Burnley are. They did really well, they have good players and we played a good 15-20 minutes in the first-half, we created chances and the last 20 minutes we lost some tempo. We did well in the second half and played really well and could’ve scored more goals. Good result, after the international break we take the victory and look what’s next.

“We run and fight for every ball, Burnley play for long balls and they’re a master at this. You have to defend set pieces well and anything could’ve happened if Chris Wood had scored that goal near the end. We had chances but couldn’t score more unfortunately.

“The importance is improving our game I am satisfied that the second-half was better than first. The team showed me the way we want to play and the shape we want to play in. All the guys gave everything, it doesn’t matter if the performance is good or not. It’s important that you fight for your teammates and everyone was incredible.”

On John Stones and Raheem Sterling: “Both played really well – it was a difficult game, tried to tell them to forget about previous 5-0 because Burnley always fight and never give up and are able to go to any stadium and create a problem and know what they have to do so I give a lot of credit to them today.”
