Fashion designer claims to be innocent after he was arrested in Lagos

A fashion designer identified as Sunshine was allegedly arrested by some policemen and later paraded as a traffic robber, however, family and friends claim he was paraded because they failed to pay N200,000 to bail him.

1st News gathered that the five suspected traffic robbers, including a fashion designer, were arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command during a raid on a criminal hideout in the Ikorodu area of Lagos on Thursday, February 4.

However, one of his workers at Jewel Fashion Design, Oyedeji Yetunde has debunked the report that her boss is a robber.

According to her, he was arrested for not wearing a face mask and when they got to to the task force office in Oshodi, the policemen asked for N200,000 for his bail but they couldn’t afford the huge sum.

Taking to Facebook, she wrote;

“I was surprised with this; my boss went to deliver cloth on Thursday night only to be apprehended by some guys asking him about his nose mask and he said he has forgotten it.

Immediately they bounce on him with different kinds of slap and heavy beating at the garage,” she said.

Continue reading what she said;

“This so-called policeman called with his number, and we all went there telling them he is a fashion designer well know around munirat aleje.

In fact, we were asked to come to task office at oshodi.”

“They themselves later told us he is innocent but because he didn’t use his nose mask so they asked for Two hundred thousand from us for his bail and we said we don’t have such, only to see this today about what they posted about him.

Is this fair?”

Other Ikorodu residents also came forward to confirm her claim. One Quddus Gbagba described the fashion designer as a man of good character.

UK: Self Assessment customers use monthly payment plans to pay £46 million in tax

More than 20,000 Self Assessment customers have used HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) online monthly payment plan service since April to spread the cost of their tax bill, totalling £46 million so far, it has been revealed.

Where customers are struggling to pay their bill in full, the self-serve Time to Pay service allows Self Assessment customers to manage how they pay their tax liabilities. Customers can use the online service for tax bills worth up to £30,000 without the need to talk to HMRC. The service will create a bespoke monthly payment plan for the customer based on how much tax is owed and the length of time needed to pay.

Last year, 123,000 customers used self-serve Time to Pay to spread the cost of their 2019 to 2020 tax bill, worth £460 million.

Customers have until 31 January 2022 to complete their tax return for the 2020 to 2021 financial year and pay their bill. If they can’t pay in full, customers can set up their own Time to Pay arrangement online if they:

  • have filed their tax return for the 2020 to 2021 financial year
  • owe less than £30,000
  • are within 60 days of the payment deadline
  • plan to pay their debt off within the next 12 months or less

If customers owe more than £30,000, or need longer to pay, they should call the Self Assessment Payment Helpline on 0300 200 3822.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said:

We understand some customers might be worrying about paying their Self Assessment bill this year, and we want to support them. To see if you’re eligible to set up a payment plan, go to GOV.UK and search ‘pay my Self Assessment’.

Self-serve Time to Pay is just one way customers can pay their Self Assessment tax bill, a full list of alternative payment methods is available on GOV.UK.

HMRC urges everyone to be alert if they are contacted out of the blue by someone asking for money or personal information. Customers should always type in the full online address ( to get the correct link for filing their Self Assessment return online securely and free of charge. HMRC sees high numbers of fraudsters emailing, calling or texting people claiming to be from the department. If in doubt, HMRC advises not to reply directly to anything suspicious, but to contact them straight away and to search GOV.UK for ‘HMRC scams’.

Further information

Latest self-serve Time to Pay figures are for arrangements set up in the 2020 to 2021 financial year and are up to 28 November 2021.

Figures for the 2019 to 2020 financial year are from 1 October 2020 to 31 March 2021.

'People's Choice Awards' Winners 2021: Dwayne Johnson and Kim Kardashian Win Big

peoples choice awards winners

The People’s Choice Awards, an awards ceremony where the winners are voted entirely by the U.S. public took place last night (Tuesday, December 7).

Dwayne Johnson was the big winner of the night, taking home Male Movie Star of 2021 and Comedy Movie Star of 2021, as well as receiving the honorary People’s Champion Award. Viewers were also treated to an iconic performance from Christina Aguilera, who received the inaugural Music Icon Award.

The list of famous faces and winners does not stop there. Newsweek has the full list below of the People’s Choice Awards winners.

The People’s Choice Awards Winners 2021

Spanning 40 categories covering movies, television, music, and pop culture, The People’s Choice Awards is one of the biggest nights for the entertainment industry.

The awards are voted for entirely by the public, unlike other awards ceremonies where a very small board of experts choose the winner they want to see take home the trophy.

Hosted by comedian Kenan Thompson at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, many famous faces took to the stage to present the awards, including Cardi B, Jojo Siwa, Laverne Cox, Lil Rel Howery, Leslie Jones, Chase Stokes, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

One thing is for sure, last night was a good night to be Dwayne Johnson.

The wrestler-turned-actor took home the honorary People’s Champion Award. After accepting the prize from Jeff Bezos, in a moving gesture, Johnson dedicated the award to the late Muhammad Ali and Shushana, a recipient for the Make-a-Wish foundation.

Johnson said: “For those who may know or for those who may not know, the original people’s champion was the greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali,’ the Red Notice star said. ‘I first met Muhammed when I was a little boy and he was so cool to me. He was so kind and he was so funny. He was always wonderful to me.”

He added: “Years later to be standing here with you guys, you voted me the People’s Champion, the irony is not lost on me because I realize that what it means to be the People’s Champion is so much bigger than me. You treat people good, you treat people kind. You take care of people. You’re inclusive of people, all people, all colors, it doesn’t matter.”

Johnson then invited Shushana onto the stage, sharing her wish was to attend the People’s Choice Awards. He said: “This is a total surprise.. ‘I met her earlier. I told her how proud I was of her story. She is a fighter, she has inspired her family and friends. I want to tell you just how much you’ve inspired me and everyone around you and certainly everyone here.

“I want to give you this because you represent everything that it means to be a People’s Champion so this is for you.”

He also received trophies for Male Movie Star of 2021 and Comedy Movie Star of 2021 for his performance in Jungle Cruise.

The People’s Champion Award was not the only honor award of the evening.
Christina Aguilera received the inaugural Music Icon Award, Halle Berry took home the People’s Icon Award and Kim Kardashian received the Fashion Icon Award.

Accepting her award for Fashion Icon, Kardashian surprised fans by thanking her ex, Kanye West.

She said: “I am honestly so humbled to be here. I started off as a closet organizer and a stylist, so the fact that I’m winning a Fashion Icon Award is a pinch-me moment.

“I’m humbled every single day that designers are willing to work with me. There was a time when they weren’t. Thank you Zac Posen who dressed me and took me to my first CFDA Awards and so many amazing designers, like Ricardo [Tisci] and Olivier [Rousteing] that really believed in me. Well, [they] probably [were] talked into it by getting a call from Kanye.”

“So thank you to Kanye even for really introducing me to the fashion world. I fell in love with fashion. This is a dream that I get to wake up and wear these amazing clothes and try new things, take a risk. I’m so humbled.”

Other big nominations of the night were Justin Bieber with 10 nominations, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, and actors Selena Gomez, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, and Daniel Craig.

Lawmakers Reach Deal On Debt Ceiling Measure

5E08A33F 434D 4BAE B05E 3B6BA92998A8 1 201 a

After negotiations regarding a debt ceiling increase, it appears that lawmakers reached an agreement on Tuesday using a tool that could appeal to both political parties.

Leaders in the House of Representatives introduced a measure that would allow Democrats to ultimately increase the debt ceiling without any votes from Republicans.

As The Wall Street Journal reported:

The bill, which also prevents cuts to Medicare and other programs that threatened to kick in at the end of the year, is the product of weeks of talks between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.). It doesn’t itself raise the debt ceiling. Instead, it sets up a procedure for an additional vote on the issue that would require a simple majority in the Senate rather than the 60 votes needed for most legislation.

“So I believe we’ve reached here a solution to the debt ceiling issue that’s consistent with Republican views of raising the debt ceiling for this amount at this particular time and allows the Democrats to proudly own it, which they’re happy to do,” McConnell said.

Politico reported earlier in the afternoon, “After a leadership meeting and a Senate GOP lunch, McConnell said he’d done enough work to clinch the deal in a vote expected on Thursday.”

“There are always differences of opinion among Republicans about how to handle a delicate issue like the debt ceiling,” McConnell told the press earlier. “I’m confident that this particular procedure coupled with the avoidance of Medicare cuts will receive enough Republican support to clear the 60-vote threshold.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) voiced his approval earlier in the day, saying, “I’m going to support Democrats raising the debt ceiling without Republican votes.”

He added, “To have Democrats raise the debt ceiling and be held accountable for racking up the debt is my goal. And this helps us accomplish it.”

However, not all Republicans initially appeared to be in support of the measure. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said, “I don’t think there will be 10 Republican votes to allow the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling.”

Politico also reported that Graham “protested a provision attached to the debt limit rule change, which would prevent automatic cuts to Medicare from kicking in.”

“I don’t like this idea of tying it to Medicare. I don’t like that much at all,” Graham noted.

The measure would make Democrats increase the debt ceiling to a certain amount rather than just prolong it for a certain period of time. The “fast-track process” would also run out after January 15th, per CNN.

Politico reported, “The debt increase would likely range from $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion to ensure Congress won’t have to address the debt again before November midterms, according to several people familiar with the matter.”

Republicans have been steadfast in their desire to see Democrats expand the debt limit rather than do so with Republican support. They viewed the Democrats’ and President Joe Biden’s massive amounts of spending as a reason to force the majority party to use the reconciliation process in order to increase the debt limit.

As The Daily Wire reported, “Before Thanksgiving, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Congress that the debt ceiling — temporarily suspended by Congress in 2019 — must be raised by December 15.”

“While I have a high degree of confidence that Treasury will be able to finance the U.S. government through December 15 and complete the Highway Trust Fund investment, there are scenarios in which Treasury would be left with insufficient remaining resources to continue to finance the operations of the U.S. government beyond this date,” she warned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). “As the federal government’s cash flow is subject to unavoidable variability, I will continue to update Congress as more information becomes available.”
