Renowned Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, on Friday, February 19, had a meeting with the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, over the abduction of students and members of staff of Government Science College, Kagara.

Photos of Gumi in a meeting with some terrorists had surfaced across the media earlier in the day.

This led to the meeting with the governor at the Government House in Minna to brief him on the outcome of the meeting with the bandits.

Addressing journalists after the meeting with the governor, Gumi said, “The outcome is very positive because if you have warring factions and each faction says that I have complaints and grievances which are very simple, I think there is hope.”

1st News had reported that some students and staff of Kagara were kidnapped when bandits stormed the school on Wednesday morning. A student was also reportedly killed by the bandits during the attack.

Bello had ordered the immediate closure of all boarding schools in the bandit-ravaged areas.

Furthermore, the Senate had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency on security without further delay.

Wednesday’s attack happened a few months after bandits kidnapped over 300 schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State.

Meanwhile, a joint search and rescue mission, involving the Police, the military, and other law enforcement agencies is ongoing to safely rescue abducted persons in Niger State.

The Police Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr Frank Mba, announced this in a statement on Thursday, February 18, in Abuja.

1st News had reported that suspected terrorists on Tuesday night, invaded Government Science School, Kagara in Niger, and abducted some students.

Mba said the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Adamu, had ordered the deployment of additional tactical, intelligence, and investigative assets of the force for the rescue operation.

According to him, four units of Police Mobile Force (PMF) attached to Operation Puff Adder II, one Unit of Police Special Forces; personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU); and operatives from the Force Intelligence Bureau have been deployed.

He said that personnel of the Force Criminal Investigations Department; as well as one Police aerial surveillance helicopter, had also been deployed.
