The recent attacks against police formations and personnel, security posts and a Correctional Facility by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) is practically a dumb move by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led bythe radical, Nnamdi Kanu.
If the move is to bait the government to use excessive force in the region in a bid to rally the people behind IPOB for the secession of Biafra; then IPOB is worse than the monster it is fighting against.
The region is still struggling to catch up following the brutal 30-month civil war and impact of environmental devastation. But now, IPOB is pushing for a fresh war. A war the region is clearly not prepared for.
Self-appointed leader of the Biafra struggle, Nnamdi Kanu appears to be willing to sacrifice as many people as possible to achieve his goal. However, the question is, what is his goal? The current path he is toeing will not bring the actualization of the Biafra Republic; but a replica of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
If the goal is to break away from Nigeria, he is going in the opposite direction. Before bringing on the war he so desperately craves, there is a need to get the fundamentals right. Nnamdi Kanu has not developed a consensus aside from his cult-like and costume-wearing activities.
Is he sure the majority of people in the South East are keen on secession? Is today’s Biafra the same as the 1967 Biafra? Are other states in the South South also joining him? These and many more questions deserve answers before going for all-out war.
The continuous coordinated attacks on police posts will get the government to deploy the military to the East. Undoubtedly, the impact of that action on the economy of that region will be brutal. The ensuing suffering will probably not lead to a radical change due to the fact that a new administration in 2023 could offer some minor concessions. However, between now and 2023, a lot of carnage could have happened.

One thing is certain. There will not be a referendum on breaking up Nigeria. The component units only have the option of negotiating deals. Only a brutal civil war could lead to such disintegration, and truth be told, a ranting Kanu lacks what it takes. Indeed, his latest strategy is nothing but a spontaneous reaction without a clear exit strategy.
Kanu is more content with fame than leading a revolution. It is safe to say that he is a hustler, nothing more.
Unfortunately, his hustle is about to destroy the South East.
