Chelsea set new EPL record after beating Brentford
Chelsea on Saturday set a new Premier League record after beating their London rival Brentford 1-0 in an away Premier League tie.
The Blues defeated the newly-promoted Brentford, thanks to Ben Chilwell’s 45th-minute strike.
The win over Brentford means Chelsea have now become the first club from the English capital to win seven consecutive away London derbies in English Football League history.
Chelsea are now on top of the Premier League table with 19 points from eight fixtures.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are one point ahead of second position Liverpool and two points ahead of third-place Manchester City.
Chelsea will tackle Malmo on Wednesday in a UEFA Champions League tie at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have been backed by a former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, to win the Premier League title this season.
Tuchel’s side finished in the fourth position last season behind Liverpool, Man United and Man City.
EPL: They don’t have identity – Richards, Shearer slam Man Utd after defeat to Leicester
Former Premier League stars, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer have slammed Manchester United following their 4-2 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday.
Leicester defeated Man United at the King Power Stadium, thanks to four goals from Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu, Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka.
Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford did score for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side against Leicester.
“They don’t really have an identity,” Richards told Match of the Day.
“With Man United of the past, you know they had wingers, getting strikers into the box, midfielders running into the box also.
“But now, it looks like they are trying to keep everybody happy [in terms of] players. Individually, you have seen what they have got – [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Paul] Pogba, [Bruno] Fernandes, these players should be shining.
“[Jadon] Sancho has come in, Rashford has come in and scored a goal [against Leicester], [Anthony] Martial scored a goal a couple of weeks ago. It’s an array of talent, but they don’t know what they are doing with the talent.
“Now, Ole has to make some harsh decisions. Whether he leaves some of his big guns out, puts one on the bench or just goes back to basics and finds the plan for how to get this team playing together.”
On his part, Shearer added, “That was Man United’s problem last season, they didn’t invest in that position. ‘It’s the same again [this season].
“There’s no-one in there to really press and take control from the front. You can’t do that in the Premier League.
“They will always score, Man United, because of the brilliance they have going forward. But you cannot press if you haven’t got that aggression.
“If you don’t know what to do, then you’ve got to sit back and be compact as a team. The team that I saw [on Saturday] didn’t know whether to go or whether to sit. When they did go, it was half-hearted and not as a team.”
Congress: Crisis brews in Bauchi APC as members reject imposition of chairman, others
Fresh crisis is looming in the Bauchi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the emergence of its State chairman and other officials.
DAILY POST reliably learnt that members are poised for a showdown with top party men, including a former Speaker, Right Honourable Yakubu Dogara and Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, over imposition of party officials.
The situation has led to a palpable tension among members of the opposition party in the State following the secrecy and cover-up that highlighted the party’s Saturday’s State congress.
There was tight security at the party’s State secretariat located on Maiduguri road in Bauchi metropolis to prevent any untoward event.
A source informed DAILY POST on Saturday that party leaders in the State were holding a meeting with stakeholders on the way forward.
The meeting, according to the source, was summoned to iron out certain grey areas over who got what in the State executive council of the party in order to avoid any potential crisis.
It was gathered that while Malam Adamu, who is the leader of the party in the State was insisting on his anointed candidate becoming the next party chairman, members rejected a candidate brought forward by Dogara.
It was further learnt that Adamu’s preferred candidate was not being accepted by majority of members who alleged that he was not an active member of the party, which lost power in the state in 2019.
Another source informed that a faction of the party is seeking continuation in office for the outgoing incumbent caretaker chairman, Alhaji Uba Nana, which is being opposed by many party members.
Those opposed to Nana’s emergence as substantive chairman of the party based their opposition on the ground that he was in office when crisis hit APC in the build up to the 2019 general election, which saw some chieftain leaving the party and its eventual ouster from government by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A member of the outgoing caretaker committee of the party, who spoke with journalists on condition of anonymity, said that party leaders were doing everything possible to avoid another round of crisis.
When asked what the leaders were doing, the outgoing official simply said, “What we are doing is a top secret of the party. As soon as we are done, we will let you know what we want you to know.”
DAILY POST had reported on Saturday that a party stalwart, Alhaji Sunusi Baba Takko, advised the party to ensure fairness, equity and justice in the conduct of its state congress with a view to avoiding a repeat of ugly experience in the party.
According to him, only fair play, justice and level playing ground for all contestants would enable APC to be well positioned ahead of the 2023 electives for to wrestle power from the PDP.
“All stakeholders of our great party must play politics of inclusiveness if we must win in 2023 and beyond. Unity of purpose should be our watchword because a house divided against itself cannot stand,” Baba Takko declared.
