Published

Best contraceptive to prevent pregnancy? Contraception is the process of preventing pregnancy using different methods as unprotected sexual intercourse may lead to unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

More than 15 million girls between 15 and 19 give birth every year worldwide while an additional 5 million have abortions.

Contraceptive use helps individuals to decide freely and responsibly if, when and how many children they wish to have.

Different methods of contraception have been used for thousands of years by both men and women in a bid to plan families by controlling fertility.

There are many methods of contraception today which vary in their effectiveness, delivery and use as well as the mechanism they work by.

Some contraceptives may only be used when prescribed by a doctor while others do not need medical advice.

Contraceptives are either barrier methods (e.g. condoms), or hormonal methods (e.g. oral contraceptive pills).

When selecting a method, one’s sexual relationship(s), sexual behaviours engaged in, frequency of intercourse, risk of sexually transmitted illness, efficacy of the contraceptive method, ability to comply with use, ability to tolerate side-effects, cost, convenience, religious beliefs, partner(s) attitudes, and additional personal factors that may influence the decision and method compliance must be considered.

What Is The Best Contraceptive?

The following are available contraceptive options;

Coitus interruptus (withdrawal method)

This method of contraception does not require any supervision or medical advice.

However, it is unreliable as it requires the removal of the penis from the vagina before ejaculation.

Additionally, pre-ejaculatory secretions (pre-cum) may contain millions of sperm cells.

It is the least effective method of contraception and does not prevent sexually transmitted illnesses.

Condoms

Condoms are available for both men and women. The male condom is placed on the erect penis before the start of sexual intercourse.

The female condom is inserted in the vagina before intercourse and removed after. They are easy to use, very effective, affordable and easily accessible.

They may, however, cause allergic reactions in some people, may cause reduced sensitive, maybe worn wrongly and may also burst or slip off during sex.

Condoms cannot and shouldn’t be reused.

Diaphragm

This is a device that is inserted in the vagina before the onset of sex.

It is similar to a condom in its mechanism and protects against sexually transmitted infections.

Diaphragms also contain spermicides (materials that kill sperm cells).

They may protect against some sexually transmitted infections and are very effective.

They are, however, required to be fitted by a medical professional before sexual intercourse and also left in place for a period after sexual intercourse.

Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs or IUDs)

These are contraceptive materials made of plastic or metallic materials, with hormones on them inserted into the uterus.

They work by interfering with the movement of sperm cells and preventing implantation.

They are typically long-acting (lasts between 5 to 10 years), very effective and allow a prompt return to fertility after removal.

They, however, do not protect against sexually transmitted illnesses.

They may also cause some side effects and complications.

Oral Contraceptive Pills

These are either single hormonal pills (mini-pill or Progesterone Only Pill) or Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills (contains the hormones progesterone and oestrogen).

The mini-pill is taken every day of the cycle and works by preventing sperms cells from travelling through the cervix which prevents implantation.

Combined oral contraceptive pills work by preventing ovulation in addition to the effect produced by the Mini pill.

They are taken every day for 21 days.

Injectable Contraceptives

Depot Provera is an effective contraceptive injectable which offers contraception for 3 months and can be self-administered.

There are also

They are particularly important for women who have difficulties in remembering their daily pills.

Combined injectables are also available and given every 4 weeks.

Implants

These are materials inserted under the skin of the thigh or the arm.

They offer contraception for around a period of 3 to 5 years but maybe removed before then if one wishes and return to fertility.

Published

on

What causes vaginal discharge blood? It’s important to know that every woman has vaginal discharge and healthy discharge is not only completely normal, but also necessary.

And, if you’re wondering why you have so much vaginal discharge, you may be surprised to know that most women produce about a half to one teaspoon of vaginal discharge every day.

While there is an array of colour and consistency to vaginal discharge, it it’s quite common and normal to have vaginal discharge blood after your period.

However, regular menstrual periods are a fact of life for most women, but vaginal discharge blood outside your period can seem alarming.

Read; This is what happens to you when you eat vaginal discharge

It can sometimes signal a major problem too but often, however, minor concerns are behind vaginal discharge blood.

With that said what causes vaginal discharge blood?

There are many reasons why a woman may experience vaginal discharge blood, and below are some of the most likely ones.

Menstrual Cycle

Discharge that appears bloody can be the result of menstrual residue mixing with vaginal discharge.

Often the amount of discharge your body produces increases at the end of your menstrual cycle, so discharge can often look brown or rusty.

Pregnancy

You can expect your period to stop when you’re pregnant but some women have some bleeding during the first trimester.

Age-related

Similarly to pregnancy, women can experience bleeding during the early stages of puberty and the final stages of menopause.

This irregular bleeding can mix with discharge, creating a bloody or brown appearance.

You may have symptoms for years. A common one is light, irregular bleeding, which might seem like bloody discharge.

Thyroid Disease

The thyroid gland makes a hormone that helps control a lot of body functions, from your heart rate to your menstrual cycle.

Irregular periods or vaginal discharge blood can happen when your body has too much thyroid hormone known as hyperthyroidism or not enough of it, called hypothyroidism.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a hormone disorder. It causes tiny, fluid-filled bubbles called cysts to grow in the ovaries.

The result can be:

  • Periods that are irregular, long, or don’t come often
  • Ovaries that don’t work well
  • Extra facial and body hair due to higher levels of a male hormone in your body

Problems With Your Uterus, Cervix, or Ovaries

Rarely, vaginal discharge blood is a sign of a more serious problem in your reproductive system, such as:

  • Endometriosis (when the lining inside your uterus grows on the outside of it)
  • A burst ovarian cyst
  • Uterine cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Ovarian cancer

Infections

Infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can cause bloody vaginal discharge blood.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, is the general term for a bacterial infection of a woman’s reproductive organs.

PID is most often a complication of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) such as gonorrhea or chlamydia.

However, it is possible to get PID from other causes.

And any woman can be affected. It is most often found in sexually active women under age 25, especially those who have had PID before, have multiple partners or douche frequently.

Symptoms include fever, lower abdominal pain, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, pain and/or bleeding during sex, and pain on urination.

What causes vaginal discharge blood? However, if you notice blood-stained vaginal discharge, think about the timing of your last menstrual cycle or recent sexual activity.

In a situation where your symptoms occur outside of your cycle or sexual activity, make an appointment with your DOCTOR.

Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics, depending on your test results.

Antibiotics are available for many sexually transmitted infections and bacteria.
