Ex-Senate minority leader, Olujimi, joins Ekiti guber race

Senator Biodun Olujimi

A former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, on Sunday declared her intention to vie for the Ekiti Governorship position in the elections scheduled for June 18, 2022, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Olujimi made the declaration during a chat with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Sunday, quelling rumours about her governorship ambition.

According to the former lawmaker, the decision to join the race was borne out of the desire to project the state to an enviable status in the country.

The lawmaker representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, said she decided to run for the coveted position after entreaties from crucial stakeholders of the state.

Olujimi noted she possessed the quality and experience required to harness the vast state’s resources for productive and developmental purposes.

She said, “Our mission is to rebuild, to reposition, and to regain the state’s glory. We are very committed with passion to make sure that Ekiti occupies its rightful position in the comity of states.

“We will remain focused on our mission to turnaround the fortunes of the state by revolutionizing all the critical sectors of governance with direct focus on the downtrodden masses.

“And also, our plan is to explore all the areas of possible economic prosperity and development without exploiting the people. God Almighty had blessed Ekiti State with abundant natural and human resources. What we need is the right leadership. And Olujimi is the right person.

“So, all we need is a candidate with good character, great antecedents and that is popular. And I have consistently proved that with my track record. My footprints are everywhere in the state despite being from Ekiti South.”

CJN cautions security agents on harassment of judges

Published

CJN Tanko Mohammed

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, on Wednesday, cautioned security and agencies over the increasing harassment of judicial officers in the country.

Muhammad made the call at a special session put together by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to herald the formal commencement of the 2021/2022 legal year of the Supreme Court.

The CJN was reacting to the October 29 invasion of the Abuja home of the Supreme Court Justice, Mary Peter Odili, by security agents.

He said: “I must make it known to all and sundry that we have had enough dosage of such embarrassments and harassments of our judicial officers across the country and we can no longer take any of such shenanigans. The silence of the judiciary should never be mistaken for stupidity or weakness.

“By the nature of our work, we are conservative but not conquered species and should not be pushed further than this by any individual, institution, or agency of the government.

“With time, those taking the judiciary as a mere weakling will soon realise that it is from the calmest seas, we often experience the fiercest storms.

“Nigeria, to the best of my knowledge, is not a lawless society.

“We should begin to do things that will project us favourably and rightly, too, to the international community.

“No law permits anyone to invade, subdue or overawe any Nigerian citizen in his or her residence with a flimsy, fraudulently obtained search warrant.”

House of reps

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, resolved to commence investigations into the non-appearance of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company for the 2022 budget defence.

This followed the adoption of a motion moved by a lawmaker, Fatau Mohammed (Katsina).

Mohammed, who led the debate on the matter, decried the non-appearance of the three organizations for the defence of their 2022 budget proposals before the House Committee on Banking and Currency.

He said: “It will interest the House to know that none of the above agencies has been over sighted in the past two years and they have failed to make their 2022 budget available to the committee. How long shall we allow this illegality to continue.”

In his submission, the Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu, accused the agencies of flouting the law as every government agency was required to appear before the House for the defence of their budget.

”This is a breach of the law of which this House should make a finding and place it properly the culpability of these agencies. It would be proper for this to come in a way of a motion for an investigation,’’ he said.

In his ruling, the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, said the House leadership would engage the committee to resolve the matter.
