Senate 1

The Senate has ordered an investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the gas explosion at Ladipo Spare Parts Market, in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos, which led to the death of at least five persons, including a 10-year-old boy.

This followed the passage of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Senator Solomon Adeola, APC Senator, representing Lagos West Senatorial District of the state, calling the attention of the Senate to yet another explosion in his district resulting in fatalities.

The Senate directed its committees on Petroleum Downstream and Gas to investigate the explosion with a view to preventing future occurrences.

The Senator, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro, noted that there has been a recurrence of similar explosions in recent times in the same area in his senatorial district as happened in 2016, 2018 (Abule-Egba), 2019 (Abule–Egba), 2020 (Ijegun) and 2020 (Ile-Epo, Oke-Odo), also in 2020 (Abule-Ado), stressing that Nigerians resident in all the densely populated areas where these explosions occurred now live in fear of not only losing properties and investment but their lives and those of love ones from these frequent explosive fire disasters.

The Senate observed a minute silence in honour of the innocent Nigerians that lost their lives in the inferno and directed NEMA, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, to immediately send relief materials to affected victims and offset medical bills of those hospitalized.

DAILY POST reports that five persons, including a 10-year old boy, lost their lives following the explosion at an industrial gas retailing outlet in Ladipo Spare Parts Market, Lagos.

Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, acting Zonal Coordinator, South-West Zonal Office, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the development in a statement in Lagos.

Farinloye said the cause of the explosion, which occurred on Tuesday morning at the shop located at 33/35 Ojekunle St. Ladipo Spare Parts Market, Lagos was yet to be ascertained.

Chelsea vs Man United: It was arrogance – Hasselbaink slams Jorginho

Former Chelsea striker, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has slammed midfielder, Jorginho after his error led to Manchester United’s goal.

Jorginho gifted Jadon Sancho his first Premier League goal for Manchester United, with Chelsea having to come from a goal down to take a point at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian-Italian was at fault for the Red Devils’ goal after failing to deal with a high ball that was sent forwards by Bruno Fernandes.

The midfielder’s attempt to bring down the high ball with his foot backfired with Sancho racing on goal before calmly slotting the ball past Edouard Mendy.

And Hasselbaink wondered why Jorginho did not just clear it or head it back to his goalkeeper.

“He should head it, he should head it back. You can’t take that chance and if you do it has to come off,” Hasselbaink said on Sky Sports.

“…It’s not a bit of arrogance…It is arrogance.

“Thinking ‘oh I will take it down out of the sky and play,’ no. Two men are coming at you, just head the ball back and get people behind the ball.

“Sancho takes the goal really well but this, you don’t do it.

“Also, you know yourself… yes technically he is a very good player but he is not somebody who is blessed with pace so he’s never going to be able to get behind Sancho so you don’t take the risk.

“Just head it back, have people behind you and don’t get a goal against [you] and you still have to score one goal to win the match. It’s silly.”

Manchester United legend, Roy Keane and Jamie have both predicted that Manchester City would win the Premier League this season ahead of title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.

While Chelsea settled for a 1-1 with Manchester United on Sunday, Manchester City brushed aside stubborn West Ham United 2-1 to close the gap in the Premier League to just one point.

Chelsea still maintain their lead at the summit with just one point ahead of Manchester City while Liverpool are just two points off the top after their empathic 4-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday.

Keane said he has been impressed by the form of Chelsea and Liverpool but still believes City will defend their title and become English champions for an eighth time.

Keane told Sky Sports, “I kind of wrote off Manchester City last year and regretted it because they turned it on from November and won it so easily.

“Liverpool have kept a few clean sheets but they’ve looked a bit open at times. I think Man City right now look really strong defensively. Liverpool are scoring all the goals but I’d go with Man City right now.”
