BREAKING: EFCC returns N19.3bn Kogi salary bailout ‘hidden’ in Sterling Bank to CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has confirmed the receipt of N19,333,333,333 the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered from the Kogi Salary Bailout Account ‘hidden’ in Sterling Bank.

EFCC Head of Media, Wilson Uwujaren, made the announcement in a statement Friday night.

Uwujare said the development puts to rest “the campaign of misinformation and unconscionable denials by the Kogi State Government that no fund was recovered from its bail out account”.

The CBN in a letter with ref: DFD/DIR/CON/EXT/01/099 informed EFCC Chairman (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa that it had received the money.

The letter reads in part: “We refer to your letter dated November 5, 2021 with Ref. No: CR:3000/EFCC/LS/CMU/REC-STE/VOL.4/047 on the above subject and wish to confirm the details of the receipt of the amount as stated below: Bank: Sterling Bank Plc; Amount: N19, 333,333,333; Date of receipt: 04 November, 2021.”

Uwujaren said return of the money to the CBN was in compliance with the October 15, 2021 order of a Federal High Court in Ikoyi directing the unfreezing of the account to enable Sterling Bank to remit the balance to the CBN.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke gave the Order pursuant to an application filed by the EFCC.

The commission earlier told the court that Sterling Bank, where the account was domiciled, acknowledged the existence of the said account housing N19,333,333,333.

On August 31, 2021, Justice Tijani Garba Ringim, a vacation Judge, ordered the freezing of the account, following an ex-parte application filed by the EFCC.

The agency explained that detectives swung into action after “credible and direct intelligence”.

EFCC said the information led to the tracing of the funds “reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities in account No. 0073572696 domiciled in Sterling Bank with the name Kogi State Salary Bailout Account”.

“The transfer has put paid to any further controversy regarding source and ownership of the funds and most importantly, aborted the funds dissipation”, Uwujaren added.

They made this disclosure when they spoke with DAILY POST on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

The officers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, insisted the non-payment of their November salary has compounded their suffering.

The officers, who said that they are hungry, said that other security agents have been paid their November salaries.

“All others security agents have been paid. What is our offense, is it a curse to be in Nigeria police?”

Another officer said that anyone who reveal his or her identity would be accused of leaking official secret.

“Economic crunch has crushed most of us due to irrational cost of living, an hungry man is an hangry.

“Police is seriously hunting any one that air his views, they say you are leaking official secret, they want you to remain zombie, suffering and smelling, please cover the identity”.

Another police officer in his own submission said, “It is lame excuses, police can not bare the brunt, is not our fault it is leadership failures, for Christ sake all others security agents have been paid since last week, today is 8/12, how do they want us to survive when we are not doing other jobs or to go and commit crimes.”

But, the police authority in a signal issued by Force Headquarters in Abuja and obtained by DAILY POST on Wednesday, noted that the delay was due to delay in processing of funds from the federal ministry of finance.

The signal addressed to various commands and formations reads, “Information received from IPPIS unit of OAGF indicates delay in processing of funds from federal ministry of finance for payment of November 2021 salaries which that there will be delay in payment of November 2021 salary.”

Simba TVS, Nigeria’s leading tricycle company has launched the brand new TVS King Deluxe+ tricycle, with revolutionary iTouch technology. Aimed at creating an easier, safer and more comfortable riding experience, the innovative new starting system of the vehicle is a product of extensive research and development by TVS Motor Company – one of the world’s largest two- and three-wheeler companies.

At a glittering event held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, the Simba Group launched the TVS King Deluxe+ with iTouch, which contains several upgraded features and enhancements over existing models, with the revolutionary new starting system forming the cornerstone of this next generation vehicle.

This iTouch feature assures a one-touch noiseless start and is made possible as a result of a new starting system that completely eliminates the starter motor. This not only reduces the frequency of wear on parts, but also reduces fuel consumption resulting in significantly reduced operating costs of the vehicle. The rider also enjoys a starting mechanism that is more convenient and comfortable, and an enhanced riding experience overall as a result.
