Senior citizens centre liaises with state govts on capacity building for older persons

The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), has announced plans to liaise with the 36 states in order to equipment and empower older persons.

Its Director General, Dr Emem Omokaro, who stated this when she visited Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State in Ado Ekiti, at the weekend, explained that the initiative was put together to reduce poverty, health and social challenges of older persons.

In a statement by the NSCC’s Head of Public Affairs, Media and Communication, Omini Oden, Omokaro, said, “We will ensure that key strategic actions are taken through multi-sectoral, sub-national partnerships and high level advocacy for fundamental positive perception of ageing and old age in Nigeria.

“This will be targeted on how poverty reduction, vulnerability mitigation, health and social services systems can accelerate inclusion and improve quality of life for senior citizens and the most vulnerable among them.

“Some of the steps will be building Intergenerational synergies that will integrate youths for sustainability through co-education and partnerships within the context of senior citizens-NSCC innovative livelihood programs, Public Works Schemes for income generation and education and volunteering programs within senior citizens centres.”

According to her, “National Senior Citizens Centre is offering partnerships with State governments on capacity building on ageing mainstreaming in relevant state ministries and agencies to enhance multi- sector collaborations within the states, mainstreaming geriatric assessment and Social care in state primary health care systems and capacity building for community health workers and ensuring inclusion and participation of States representatives in the development of national certification and Regulatory framework for domiciliary social care agencies and care givers.”

Meanwhile, Governor Fayemi, represented by his Deputy Governor, Bisi Egbeyemi commended the Federal Government for setting up NSCC and noted that Ekiti State government would key into the partnership arrangements offered by the National Senior Citizens Centre.

While commending the Ekiti Council of Elders for the visionary move of constructing the Ekiti Elders Resort, he appealed to the National Senior Citizens Centre for its counsel on effective operationalization of the Ekiti Elders Resort.

An Abia High Court sitting in Umuahia and presided by Justice Benson Anya has awarded N1bn to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, against the Federal Government over the infringement of his Fundamental Human Rights by the military.

In a judgment delivered Wednesday morning that last for an hour, Justice Anya said it was wrong for the military to have invaded his home in Afaraukwu, Umuahia on September 10, 2017, which made him flee the country.

[BREAKING] Nnamdi Kanu: Police disperse Sowore, others with ‘tear gas’, bullets at Abuja court

Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force have dispersed a former presidential aspirant and activist Omoyele Sowore and other individuals who were present at the Federal High Court to monitor the arraignment of the leader of the proscribed group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, The PUNCH has observed.

The PUNCH reports that Sowore who arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday morning was barred from accessing the court premises and was attacked by some hoodlums.

After which the Security operatives began to fire live ammunition into the air creating an environment of fear and disarray.

The PUNCH reports that Sowore, an activist had on October 21, 2021, visited the Federal High Court to witness the ongoing trial of Kanu.

Sowore who was also attacked then blamed the operatives of the Department of State Services for the attack on him.

FERMA completes 10 road projects appropriated to Kebbi in 2021 – Official

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in Kebbi state, has completed 10 road projects appropriated to the state under the special maintenance repairs and special intervention of COVID-19 projects in 2021.

The agency’s Maintenance Engineer in the state, Mr Rilwanu Usman, who confirmed this while speaking with newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday said that the projects were completed in view of their economic and agricultural importance to people of the state.

According to him, “the works completed under special maintenance repairs are, construction of access road in Adamu Augie College of Education (COE), Argungu, which is 1.0 kilometre of access road constructed and about 750m line drain provided.

“Construction of culvert and drainage along Lailaba to Yeldu phase one, which was an additional 4.0 kilometres of earth road constructed with eight number culverts provided as well as culverts in 2.5 kilometres of road surface dressing as we are working within the limited fund.

“Special repairs of Malando-Ngaski–Warra Road, which is special repairs, involving patching of potholes, scraping of some section of about 2 kilometres in length, repaired with asphalt, among others.

“Emergency repairs of scoured pile caps of bridge three in the flood-prone Fadama section of Argungu- Bui road. Special maintenance repairs of Tuga- Ka’oje road which is 0.72 of failed section fully repaired, involving potholes, among others,” he said.

Usman added that there were also five projects under the COVID19 special intervention programme which were competed in 2021.

He said: “There was general maintenance of Birnin Kebbi-Jega- Sokoto road which is 1.7 kilometre of distress pavement strengthened with wearing course and overlaid a new layer of asphalt.

“We also have Kalgo- Bunza-Kamba road, which had been giving motorists headache because of failed section and it was repaired with asphalt concrete. Argungu-Bui road, as some failed section of the road, was repaired with asphalt wearing course, patching of potholes and construction of line drain.

“We have also completed 2.3 kilometres of Malando-Ngaski-Warra road, which was the certification of failed section and repairs with asphalt and well as patching of potholes.

“Lastly, Rijau- Ribah-Wasagu road, received attention under the COVID-19 programme as two number culverts were constructed, certified road length of 1.5 kilometres and patched more than 3,000 square meters of potholes under the COVID19 programme,” he said.

On direct labour, he said that the washed-out bridge of Argungu–Bui Road has also been repaired sequel to approval by the Agency’s Managing Director, Nuradeen Rafin-Dadi, in 2021.

“We have done no fewer than 20 direct labour projects last year, and we also have a series of approval to connect key roads with the main federal roads in the state.

“Through the efforts some of the lawmakers in the state, we have installed numerous solar street lights in Koko, and are undergoing construction of drains and other road furniture, among other projects yet to come,” Usman said.

The maintenance engineer commanded FERMA’s MD, lawmakers, Attorney -General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami and Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for their efforts in making the state to be among the best in the maintenance of federal roads in the country.
