We’re still waiting for the Department of Treasury to roll out those $20 Harriett Tubman bills, but in the meantime, the bureau responsible for producing the state’s coins is making plans to honor #MayaAngelou on the quarter!

According to the New York Post, The US Mint has already started rolling out quarters featuring activist and poet Dr. Maya Angelou. The new design marks a moment in history as the first time a black woman has appeared on the coin.

“Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country–what we value, and how we’ve progressed as a society,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement. “I’m very proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most remarkable women, including Maya Angelou.”

The new quarter will still feature George Washington’s face on the ‘heads’ side, and pay homage to Maya Angelou and her autobiography, ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings,’ on the ‘tails’ side.

The Mint reportedly plans to roll out four other commemorative quarters this year, paying tribute to women who made history in their respective fields. The coins will feature Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Wilma Mankiller, the first female leader of the Cherokee nation; Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American Hollywood star; and Nina Otero-Warren, a woman’s suffragist and educator in the US.

Angelou’s coin, however, is the first of the American Women Quarters Program to be produced.

“Maya Angelou’s writing and activism inspired countless Americans and her legacy helped fuel greater fairness and understanding across our nation,” said Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Senate sponsor of the bill. “She is exactly the type of leader I had in mind when Senator Fischer, Representative Lee and I wrote our bipartisan legislation to create a series of quarters honoring the contributions of American woman. This coin will ensure generations of Americans learn about Maya Angelou’s books and poetry that spoke to the lives experience of Black women.”

Cardi B Issues Statement After Lawsuit Win Saying “I Thought I Would Never Be Heard”

Cardi B issues a statement in response to her legal win against blogger Tasha K. As previously reported, Cardi was awarded $3.8 million total after Tasha and her company Kebe Studios LLC were found liable for defamation, invasion of privacy through false light portrayal and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Her full statement was provided to The Shade Room by Cardi’s team. Within her words she said, “I thought I would never be heard or vindicated and I felt completely helpless and vulnerable.”

Cardi Gives Statement

“After almost four years of repeated libel and slander against me, being able to walk away from this victorious brings me great happiness,” Cardi said.

She continued on to say she appreciates Judge Ray for the “fair and impartial trial.” Additionally, Cardi thanked the jury and their “careful deliberation” over the last two weeks.

“I am profoundly grateful for the hard work and support from my legal team. Most importantly, thank you to my family and close friends who held my hand and helped me get the support I needed during this experience.”

“During this trial, all of you have learned about the darkest time in my life. That moment in time was fueled by the vile, disgusting, and completely false narratives that were repeatedly and relentlessly being shared online. I thought I would never be heard or vindicated and I felt completely helpless and vulnerable. I have never taken for granted the platform that my fame allows me to have, which is why for over three years I dedicated every resource I had to seek justice. And not just justice for me. The truth is that the intentional harm that was done to me, is done to countless others every day. The only difference between me and the high schooler who is being cyberbullied and lied on by their classmates is the money and resources I have access to. We collectively have to say enough is enough. We can no longer be a society that turns a blind eye to blatant lies. The unchecked behavior and provably false content on platforms like YouTube have to be addressed and removed. The constant harassment and lies that are reported as factual from journalists and bloggers have to end.”

Cardi’s Continued Statement

“My career began on social media so I know the power it has. Over the past few years, we’ve seen how social media platforms were able to bring important and necessary conversations to the forefront–such as Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate, and Women’s Rights. However, we’ve also seen countless stories of children and adults deciding to take their own lives due to cyberbullying and intentional attacks. So while I am very grateful that this trial has come to its conclusion and the jury has rendered a powerful and substantial message, literally–I really hope that my experience forces all of us, but especially the platforms who allow this behavior to be a part of their communities, to re-think what moves us forward as a society versus what cripples us.”

“If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for help at 1-800-273-TALK.”

Slim Jxmmi, one half of the rap group, Rae Sremmurd, was arrested this morning at a northeast Miami apartment after he allegedly assaulted the mother of his young child following an argument. According to NBC Miami, Jxmmi’s girlfriend Kee told police she confronted Jxmmi over a woman he followed on social media. Following the confrontation, Jxmmi left the apartment with his music producer and told Kee he was going to the gym. However, one of her friends said he saw the two men drinking at a bar.

When Jxxmi and the producer returned to the apartment, that’s when things escalated. Kee claims the men smelled of alcohol. While stepping away, she went to take a shower, and when she returned to the living room, Jxmmi was lying on the floor, and their son was sleeping in a playpen. Kee asked the rapper to assist her in moving their child’s playpen, which he refused. Reports state that after attempting to take the baby into a bedroom, Jxmmi allegedly grabbed Kee’s hair pulling her extensions out.

To try to have receipts of the assault, Kee began recording the argument and sent the video to one of her friends, according to police. Jxmmi then began chasing Kee around the apartment, attempting to get the phone, and jumped on his girlfriend to retrieve the phone out of her bra. Reports also state that Kee went into the bedroom and closed the door before Jxmmi kicked it in. Once inside, the two fought over the phone on the balcony, where he grabbed it and threw it, allegedly telling Kee the video would “destroy his celebrity status.”

Although Kee had scratch marks on her chest and Jxmmi was charged with battery and transported to the Miami-Dade Police Department and given a $1500 bond, the mother made a post on Instagram denying the assault. Kee called out Miami-Dade Police Department and said the incident was cap. Roomies, what do you think about this situation?

Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, a Nigerian Catholic priest based in Malawi, on Tuesday appealed to the country’s football team to switch off their phones ahead of their match with Morocco in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on January 25.

Ugwu took to his Facebook page to make the appeal, saying that Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari might surprise the Malawians with a phone call as he is known for ‘chasing after rats while his house is on fire’ .

He said; “Because Buhari can just surprise anyone and even go to the extent of chasing after rats while his house is on fire, that is why I am making this passionate appeal.

We remembered one certain time where he ran to Mali to settle two people fighting with sticks while his house was exploding with bombs.

“Please and please, Malawi is playing Morocco today, help me pass this message to the players and coach. . . Malawi team should switch off their phones now or ignore any call that they are not sure of. E get why.”
