Broadway’s “Beetlejuice” closes in January, ending its funky fan-fueled show on the Great White Road. She will play her final show at the Marques Theater on January 8, 2023.

But fear not, fans of the afterlife – the theatrical version of Tim Burton’s 1988 film about a troublesome evil spirit just won’t go away completely. After the curtain comes down on Broadway, Beetlejuice embarks on a 26-city national tour starting December 6 in San Francisco.

It’s the latest in a long line of recent Broadway shutdowns, including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” and “Come From Away.”

“Beetlejuice” opened in 2019 to mixed reviews and poor ticket sales. But the musical was a hit with younger audiences on social media, increasing attendance and boosting box office revenue in the process. Beetlejuice producers have capitalized on the digital fervor with contests and promotional efforts on Facebook and Instagram, especially during the dreaded month of October.

Beetlejuice was supposed to leave Broadway in June of 2021, when The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster set up shop at the Winter Garden Theatre. But thanks to the enthusiasm of the fans, the show’s backers were able to revive the show in a different place. In early 2022, Beetlejuice finds a new home, in the Marques Theater, a place large enough to house the elaborate designs and impressive fireworks needed to recreate the Night of the Living Dead.

When “Beetlejuice” makes its final Broadway arc, it will have played 27 previews, 366 regular shows at the Conservatory, and 313 regular shows at the Marquis Theater, for a total of 679 shows.

Alex Timbers (“Moulin Rouge: The Musical”) directed the stage play adaptation with recording by Eddie Perfect and a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King. Alex Brightman grew up as Beetlejuice on Broadway and earned a Tony nomination for his performance.

Like the movie, the theatrical version follows a couple who buys a new home and falls almost instantly to their death. In the afterlife, they encounter Beetlejuice, a deceitful ghost from the other world who promises to help them hunt down the house’s new residents: a widowed father and his young daughter Lydia.
